PEOPLE
Nenad Kocik

I am bothered with the political, economic and any other globalization

Professional experience: Doctor of medicine, graduated at the Faculty of Medicine in Skopje in 2001, for more than three years I have been working at the Emergency Service in Veles.

Engagement in the civic sector: I have been an activist at the civic association “Vila Zora” from Veles since I was fourteen years old. We started by reading a recital at factories, schools and at all cultural events in the town and wider (I remember that they did not let us read it only at the smelter. I was one of “Vila Zora” founders and coordinator of the young people in the association. I started an active communication with the young people from DEM as an umbrella organization, thus establishing the DEM-YOUTH. During my studies, I withdrew from active participation in the civil sector, to rejoin the organization in 2002 when it was preparing the bug meeting on 21 March 2002. That summer I was elected President of “Vila Zora”. The main reason I joined the civic sector was my love towards nature, people’s health and my desire to help the town of Veles.

Hobbies and interests: I want to play basketball, visit different countries, cultures and people, read professional literature, and I am particularly interested in giving my share in the development of the medical science.

Toughest decision: My toughest decision is to make up my mind what to specialize, not because I do not know, but because in our countries such studies do not exist, and its quite expensive to study abroad.

Ambitions: My personal ambition is to specialize in certain area, then to take my Master’s Degree and Sub-specialization. I am not sure how much I will be able to meet the needs of the environmental association, but, wherever I go, I remain its member.

In his free time he reads: “The Lancet” – a wonderful medical journal, professional medical literature, environmental magazines and newsletters of FOE and GENET

Where does he go in his free time: I have very little free time and I dedicate it to my family.

At weekends: In nature with friends

Which national/local problem does he find especially important and why? Electing an honest and accountable government and a parliament that will work for the benefit of our citizens, and not only for personal interest. In my opinion, the biggest challenge on local level resolving the status of the smelter, since, at the moment it is closed, at least officially, but even if its work is restarted, it has to work respecting the laws for environmental protection. On the other hand, the unemployment is a cancer for cure for Veles, many young people went abroad to earn money, and it simply needs to be stopped, by improving the economic condition. I am really bothered with some local sheriffs who think that at the last elections in 2002 they got the fate and the lives of the people in their own hands, and they are good for nothing.

Which global problem does he find especially important and why? I am bothered with the political, economic and any other globalization, because I think that the big countries occupy the smaller ones in a new and subtle manner. The mass destruction of nature is a huge global problem, but I do not see any desire for it to be solved.

What would he change in Macedonia and in the world? In Macedonia I would change many self-centered people who are now holding high positions and are completely incompetent. However, our future, all successes and failures depend on us. I wish no more hunger in the world, no wars, destruction of nature, hatred…

Advice/message: I like giving advice very much, but at the moment my problem is to choose the favourite message. Anyway, one that is most real in my life is: “Panta Rei” and this is how we should understand life, for our own good.

He could never: I could never be productive without working. I could not live with my closest ones whom I love very much and without good food (one can tell), too.
