International Week for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) UN Journalism and Photography Awards
 In recognition of the International Week for the Eradication of Poverty (17- 24 October) the UN System in Macedonia is launching awards for excellence in journalism and photography dealing with poverty issues in Macedonia.
In Macedonia, events and awareness-raising activities during the week 17-24 October will focus broadly on poverty issues in Macedonia and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).The MDG’s are a series of time-bound and quantifiable development goals endorsed by all members of the United Nations, including Macedonia.
The First Millennium Development Goal is to Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger by 2015. Poverty is an issue that cuts across all ethnic groups in all regions of the country. It is both a government priority and an issue that the United Nations system is committed to at the country level.
Efforts by journalists and photographers to highlight poverty issues in the country are crucial to raising awareness and keeping the issue of poverty on the local, national, and global agendas.
This year, the following prizes will be awarded by the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator:
- Journalism Award – A first prize of 1000 USD, a second prize of 750 USD and a third prize of 500 USD will be awarded to the best journalistic accomplishment in print media, with preference being given to feature stories;
- Photography Award – One prize of 1000 USD will be granted to a photographic submission. Each submission should include three photos, at least one of which has been published in the Macedonian media.
According to Mr. Frode Mauring, UN Resident Coordinator in Macedonia, stories and photographs published on the web may also apply, as long as they remain "printable," i.e. are not based on use of multimedia.
The stories and photographs must broadly relate to the issue of “Poverty in Macedonia.” The criteria for selection will be based on journalistic quality, creativity, and the impact of the story.
This competition is open only to Macedonian nationals who are freelancing or working in Macedonian media. The submissions must have appeared in a Macedonian publication between 24 October, 2002, and 10 October, 2003. The submission must include a copy of the published article/story and a reference to where and when it was published. By entering into the competition, the contestants in both categories should accept that their submissions may be reprinted in UN publications.
The deadline for submissions is Friday, 10 October, 2003. The winner will be announced at the UN Day celebration – Friday, 24 October, location TBA.
