UN Assistant Secretary General Visits Macedonia

Mr. Kalman Mizsei, UN Assistant Secretary General, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Europe and the CIS to pay official three-day visit to Macedonia

SKOPJE, 15 November, 2003 – Mr. Kalman Mizsei, UN Assistant Secretary General and UNDP Director for Europe and the CIS will pay a three day visit to Skopje from 17 to 19 November.

During Mr. Mizsei’s visit, he will meet with Prime Minister Branko Crvenkovski, President Boris Trajkovski, Vice Prime Minister Radmila Sekerinska, Vice Prime Minister Musa Xhaferi and several government ministers of key importance to UNDP.

Mr. Mizsei will also discuss the development context in Macedonia with members of the international and diplomatic communities, meet with United Nations agencies, and visit several UNDP projects.

On Tuesday, 18 November, Mr. Mizsei will give a keynote address with Mr. Nikola Popovski, Minister of Finance, Mr. Stefco Jakimovski, Minister of Economy, and Ms. Verica Hadzi Vasileva of Pittsburgh University/AmCham at the UNDP-sponsored roundtable discussion, “Public-Private Partnerships in Sustainable Job Creation.”  Present at the round table will be members of government, state institutions, the private sector and academia.   

Prior to taking up his current position with UNDP, Mr Mizsei was the Chief Investment Officer for Central and Eastern Europe for the American International Group. He has also served as Chairman of the Hungarian Export Import Bank and of Hungarian Export Credit Insurance. As Vice President for Economic Programmes at the Institute for EastWest Studies and in other positions, Mr. Mizsei has acted as a Senior Advisor to Governments in the region on their economic transition and reform programmes as well as on such issues as privatization, debt relief, governance, banking and bankruptcy reform. He served as Deputy Director of the Institute for World Economics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and was a major participant in the East and Central European Transformation project sponsored by the United Nations University.  Mr. Mizsei currently serves as the Deputy Coordinator of International Cooperation on Chernobyl.
