Vlachs Association "Santa Dzurdzu, STIP

The Vlachs Association "Santa Dzurdzu" from Stip is one of the founders of the Vlachs League from Macedonia. It was founded in 1990 and it has been acting on the territory of municipalities Stip and Karbinci for 13 years. It also takes active part in other Vlach organizations' activities in our country, as well as abroad. The goal of this association is to establish the Vlach culture, their history, tradition, customs, Vlach folklore, as well as keeping the Vlach language as part of the Macedonian cultural heritage. According to the Programme, "Santa Dzurdzu" directs its activities towards protecting human rights, it researches and initiates questions and problems in the local community and on country's level and it gives contribution to the strengthening of coexistence and good international relations.

The basic problem for this association is the danger of Vlach language extinguishing. Therefore, it has operated in this area since its foundation and in a short period of time, that is, in 1993 a show in Vlach language began at the local radio in Stip. Since 1995, on their initiative, optional classes in Vlach language were introduced at schools. In that direction were the activities for publishing books in Vlach language, audio and videocassettes. In Stip, they have organized concerts of Vlach singers, they have also organized the Academy for the National Vlachs Day several times, gave their support for opening a multiethnic library where Vlachs could find literature in their language, they publish the bilingual bulletin "Armanamea" in Vlach and in Macedonian and so on.

-This association plans to organize a festival of old original Vlach songs, which is something that Macedonia certainly misses- says Mr. Gjorgji Nikolov, president of the Vlachs Association "Santa Dzurdzu" from Stip.
