May – a month of youth, a month to remember
May, the month of spring, the month of youth (25th of May is still remembered by many people), this year, among the other things was marked by two events related with different forms of civic association. The first one, the civic protest organized in the Skopje municipality Cair on the occasion of the murder of three young boys and six injured people in an Internet – cafe, showed the profound dissatisfaction of the young and the older Cair inhabitants against the possession of weapons.
“Skopje, wake up!” is the new civil society organization whose name, I am convinced, will always be primarily related to the successfully organized peaceful protest in which the participants asked for the shooting to stop, protested against the weapons, the murders and all other evil deeds it causes. Their faces seen on the TV screens and in the newspapers expressed the anger and the determination not to stay quiet any more.
The protest was going on in the second half of May, and only a week before that, the members of the Macedonian National Committee of ICOM – International Council of museums, at the consultations in Kumanovo, pointed to the need for opening departments for education at the museums in the country. The museum workers warned that the lack of museum education impoverishes generations of young people, who in contest of the civilizations, feel the need of a lot of notions on their country, their history, the history of the world, the art, the culture, the science, the nature and the need to express their creativity.
Both requests of the civil society organizations come from the same country, they are presented in the same month, and their focus is the interest of the young people whole live mostly depends on the scripts written by adults.
The scripts need to be changed, it has been known for years and it has been spoken about by a lot of people.
The requests from the both organizations sent to the authorities will travel for a while, the young people will grow up and grow older, but this May, the month of youth, will long be remembered.
